Ireland

Garage

Review by gloria wong.

Miniature was the word of the day for me with my double-bill of this deliberately slight Irish feature and The Band's Visit

Garage is a languidly-paced piece that outlines life in a little patch of Ireland, as experienced by Josie, the nice but simple man who works at the local garage. This isn't another tale of small-town quirkiness or boredom; it takes great care in portraying small town life as just small but complex. Everyone knows everyone else, which actually helps to form a protective cocoon around someone like Josie - until events unfold that make his lack of anonymity key to his tragedy. Anchored by a strong lead performance by comedian Pat Shortt, Garage is a wonderfully unpretentious if somewhat familiar story.
