This is a real festival gem.
As a Vancouver resident, you should intuitively know why these first three episodes of a THIRTEEN-part documentary series would be relevant to our local cultural experience. As a reminder — within 2 to 3 degrees of separation — a good proportion of the city’s population knows someone from a restaurant family. We know their story, or it may in fact be our own family’s story. And if you’ve ever trekked across Western Canada into the prairies, you know Chinese restaurants, diners and cafés are a Canadian institution. I first heard of this globetrotting examination of Chinese immigration around the world from the cinematographer almost three years ago, who then shared with me a bit of the surreal experience of Cuba’s Chinatowns.
What was screened on Monday was actually the “wrong” set of episodes (not the one outlined in the festival catalogue). Nonetheless captivating, the journey began in Madagascar, then to a Chinese restaurant in Norway, and third, to a Chinese café in Outlook, Saskatchewan. Three powerful and touching episodes, whose subjects’ determination to overcome all kinds of discrimination and social barriers is plainly remarkable.
Watching the half-Chinese-half-African Madagascans referred to as “Metis.” and listening to what appeared to be a typical-looking Chinese person speak European French, was quite amazing in itself. It, in the very least, challenged my own imagination of cultural hybridity and the fluid nature of culture. This first episode showcased a 400-year-old evolution of multiculturalism that fused Chinese, African and French language and culture. Once the third episode began, I realized my mistake, and began a mental wish list of all the people that I should have brought with me to see this film. If you are not one of those who have a first-hand understanding of the impact these restaurants (and their families) had on the lives of the (generally rural) communities they served, the more reasons you have to see this film. Or if you are simply interested in knowing what Cuban-Chinese fusion food looks like, you will really enjoy this film.

AWESOME documentary! What a wonderful film that examines chinese restaurants around the world. Gotta love all the asian-black mixed kids in the Madagascar clips and the funny Chinese restaurant in small town Norway. Will eventually be out on Canadian TV because the director is Canadian.
