If you are as obsessed with the dynamics of multi-racial society and culture, or lack thereof, as I am, Big Durian is a must see. Using an easy-to-follow and often humourous mockumentary style, Amir Muhammad takes us “Multiculturalism Experts” into contemporary Malaysian politics and society —graciously reminding us that Canada is not the only multi-cultural, multi-racial and multi-ethnic nation in the world (I know, it feels like we invented this, but we’re actually quite new at it), and that there are other world experiences of distinct and powerful ethno-cultural communities constantly negotiating their political influence, economic freedom and citizenship. Most importantly, Big Durian gives Canadians some “what if” insight to what our experience of multiculturalism could have been, had we not benefited from affirmative (though now outdated) government policy and the prevalence of anti-racism in Canada.
Muhammad cleverly focuses on the panicked story of an ethnic-Malay soldier, who literally ran “amok” (which is actually Malay for “having had some existential crisis leading to mindless and random acts of violence”) in Chow Kit, a predominantly Chinese district of the capital city of Kuala Lumpur. In trying to piece together the details of this story, Muhammad unravels a complex web of social taboo, bringing to light the volatile balance of harmony that exists between the different ethno-cultural communities in Malaysia. With much resistance from interviewees, Muhammad exposes what, at the core of their social sub-consciousness, created such widespread anxiety and national alarm.
If only to remind you, or even awaken you, to the privilege of our cultural mobility, our relatively slogan-free experience of racism and, by Asia’s standards, our stable separation of Church (or Synagogue, Temple or Mosque) from State, this film is worth seeing. It showcases a different cultural model for multiculturalism: one that continues to use racial segregation as the primary mechanism for managing tolerance, is xenophobic and is, in fact, a remnant of the British colonial application of “Divide and Rule.”
