Director Keren Yedaya succeeds in painting the bitter lives of a mother and a daughter with careful precision, intimacy and subtlety. Ruthie is a single-mother who prostitutes herself on the streets of Tel Aviv, while her daughter Or is 17, works three jobs, goes to school, and is beginning to fall in love. At first, Or is strength incarnate as she literally takes care of her physically ailing mother and helps her find a job as a cleaning lady. Little by little, this path of redemption is destroyed. Ruthie is drawn back into her old habits and Or has late night flings with different boys after work. Disillusionment slowly but surely settles in.
The disturbingly immobile camera captures their daily life in wide shots from the streets of Tel Aviv to their apartment bathroom. The actors move in and out of frame naturally and beautifully, like an unchoreographed ballet. Close-ups are used sparingly but effectively on the leads, more to unravel the emotion that resides in everyday life rather than bursts of drama. The progression of the narrative is so finely constructed that the audience sits in a quiet dread until the very last moments of the film. Winner for best first feature at Cannes, Or (My Treasure) is a deeply humane portrait of a mother and daughter who struggle for life.
