In the excruciating line up for this movie, a middle-aged woman walked by and handed me a flyer for a peace rally. She said, "I'm sure Che will inspire you to come" as she passed. Unfortunately, her prophecy did not come true. This film chronicles the motorcycle trip across South America of young Ernesto Guevara de la Serna (before he became Che) and his fatter hot-headed friend Alberto Grenado. The only thing that this movie inspired me to do was to visit some of the stunning landscapes, and maybe if I was a man, I would also be inspired to meet some of the local women.
Although featuring the charismatic Gael Garcia Bernal (Y tu mama, tambien), his rendition of a young Che was only mildly convincing. Revelations of injustice, poverty and inequality were told more through Che's well-written poetic narration than through Bernal's tepid acting. However, this film did not lack the energy of humour as the two men kept up quick-paced and witty dialogue. The handheld cinematic style is intended to convey the sense of uncertainty and the men's desire for experience, but quickly it overstayed its welcome and distracted from moments of emotional stillness. The main flaw was the storyline. Although not a tale of "heroic feats," it really wasn't the tale of much else either, except some gimmicks of beautiful girls, blackened natives and a leper colony.
Which showing were you at? I saw the Saturday night screening at the Vogue. Did you see Ian McKellan in the audience? That was the most exciting thing for me about going to this movie.
I liked the portrayal of Che as a kind, compassionate and caring person, but wonder just how accurate that is? The best thing about this film is the scenery, as you've already mentioned. The shot of the Incan ruins was just breathtaking.

Gael Bernal is being profiled everywhere right now (Macleans, today's Province) and in the Macleans interview, he talks about how everyone has the conception that revolutionary legends are just that and that they must be all serious.
Havent seen the flick yet, but Bernal said Che had a good sense of humour aswell and I assume he wanted to show that too.
As far as how accurate it is, I think that question will be more critical for Terrence Mallick's Che flick.
And about the scenery, I read one review about it and it said that some movies might have had better scenery or storyline, etc but no other movie this year has combined them all together like this.
Like, Hero was obviously visually f'in amazing but the story is more fantasy like and not too deep....

What can I say? Fuckin amazing movie!
The 2 leads were great, neither the story nor acting was over the top but still powerful.
Bernal has had a diff. character in each movie Ive seen him in and no doubt his role in the upcoming Almodovar flick will be a tad different too.
He IS the closest thing to the Brando/James Dean mantle carrier. No other young, studly and skilled actor has had the resume of roles at this age since imo.
ALSO: the epilogue stating what becomes of Che as a revolutionary is just another example of US foreign policy fucking the world over. And they still wonder why they are so hated...

Its hasnt even started filming yet I think but Terrence Mallick is to direct, Steven Sodebergh to produce and.....Benicio del Toro as El Che.
