Ryuichi Hiroki’s latest film, L’Amant is the bizarre coming-of-age portrayal of high-school senior, Chikako (played by Ando Nozomi), who finds escape from her painfully boring life in accepting a year-long contract to be the collective lover to three older men. This quirky film is based on an original work by Naito Yamada, a famed Japanese writer of shojo manga, graphic novellas hugely popular amongst young women in Japan and characteristically loaded with semi-fantastical eroticism and disjointed layers of sub-narrative. Being true to its creative source, L’Amant’s almost Kafkaesque plot is simultaneously heart-felt and morbid, as it explores the interconnectedness of sexuality and self-discovery, and all the explosive (and sometimes violent) expressions of emotion and power that manifest with the journey...
As it is a contractual relationship, one is immediately drawn to the absurd imbalance between Chikako’s innocent femininity and the tripartite-sexuality of the men she calls A, B and C; her daily routine as their simulated after-school captive heightens the impersonal nature of their forced intimacy. Hiroki’s characters portray both female and male fantasies and nightmares realized and have much to offer those who enjoy unravelling the complex (sexual) meaning that is compacted into layers of poetic metaphor. After all, a stabbing is never just a stabbing. As the seasons pass, each of Chikako’s traumas and delights deliver more insight to her struggle with sexual discovery, which are at times diametrically opposed to what is naively coveted by her only friend at school. As the contract nears its end, Chikako is increasingly sexualized and fertile, both physically and emotionally. In stark contrast, the men are seen to be gradually more impotent and eventually bereft of their empowerment.
