For anyone that doesn't remember being completely insane when they were about 14 years old, this new drama from France may serve as a bracing reminder. L'Esquive (loosely translated, 'the dodge') mostly takes place in a housing project outside of Paris. The characters are a racially diverse group of teenagers and, though it is a subtext, racial/cultural tension isn't their biggest problem; their problem is hormones and, it would seem, overly developed senses of drama. Young Krimo gets dumped by his girlfriend at the beginning of the film, though she still loves him and fully expects that they will get back together. Krimo soon decides she has a crush on someone else - high-maintenance Lydia - and decides to bribe his way into the school play to be with her, creating a ripple of fights and misunderstandings. It's a frustrating age to be - when the smallest irritation can blow up into a full screaming match. Unfortunately, it can also be a frustrating age to watch.

L'Esquive does have some strong points, including all around convincing performances and some moments of tense humour. Mostly, i respected the Tunisian-French director's use of racial and class tension, which one might expect to play a starring role. Instead, they come up in surprising, at some points even devastating ways. Unfortunately, that impact comes about an hour too late.
