Of the many things missing from the brief media coverage of the 'war' against Afghanistan, that i later had to learn for myself, most surprising was the immense physical beauty of the country itself. This gorgeously photographed documentary follows an eight-year-old boy named Mir through most of one year. Mir's family has taken refuge in a cave among the ruins of the 1,600-year-old Buddhas of Bamiyan Valley, destroyed by the Taliban in 2001. His family faces many of the same challenges that other refugees face - lack of water, food, work and shelter. But the highly charming and resilient Mir is still very much a child, searching out and finding ways to be a kid. He knows his way around the dangerous caves in the valley, which still holds an eerie power despite its desecration, and Grabsky's crew is able to capture exceptional images of the valley as they follow Mir. The film doesn't shy away from its political subtext, occassionally making it a text. It's clear that the filmmaker is interested in educating people about the state of post-US invasion Afghanistan and the people living in it, making the film seem like the sort of honourable documentary that people ought to watch at festivals. But, what makes the film memorable and worthwhile in practise, are its stars - a little boy and his massive playground in the desert.

BORING. That's all I have to say about this film. Yes, the boy's cute. But he's bratty and I felt like there was no point to anything that I was seeing. I wanted more footage of the Buddah before and after destruction. I wanted Obvious Narration to take place. I felt like I was watching someone's home movie - complete with motion sickness camera work. Blah. This film was a big disappointment for me.
