Everyday, some four million people make their way through Calcutta's Howrah Train Station, one of the busiest stations in the world. Sinha's latest documentary is pure narration-free verite, capturing the experience this city-like place, brimming with life and activity. Country and city, young and old, joy and sorrow - all co-exist freely at Howrah. People come and go, engage in passing conversations, perform acrobatics for money, while Sinha's 'invisible' camera takes it all in.

Watching this vivid and textural documentary, i was reminded of how different the pacing of films was before the advent of non-linear digital editing (and, let's be honest, music videos). There's a patient rhythm to the film that i think only comes from editing in a dark room with physical film in front of you (in this case, lots and lots of physical film). In a world where pacing has largely become a function of efficiency, the effect of this documentary can be quite striking. For some, it will probably seem a little dull. But, if you're willing to give yourself over, Journeyings and Conversations will wash over you completely.
