Pre-blogging jitters soothed by Pixar's suicidal story

I have to confess...I'm nervous about blogging my script for the fundraiser.

You see, this "donate $50 and I'll write a scene!" structure is actually contrary to most screenwriters' process, including mine.

Usually you write an outline, then another draft, then another draft, then another.  Hundreds of hours later, you write a script.  Then you write another draft of your script, then another....

Scripts take time.  It took the Pixar team four years to write Up.  I'll have a month to go from an idea to a script.  (We'll forget that Stallone wrote Rocky in 3 days.)

Then this L.A. Times article about the movie Up made me feel better.  Writer-director Pete Doctor describes how in the first draft, the main character "just wanted to join his wife up in the sky.  It was almost a kind of strange suicide mission or something.  And obviously that's [a problem]."

:D  Pixar has bad first drafts?  I feel better about posting a less-than-spectacular first draft already.

Plus most of my audience is going to be family and friends who I hope will read with loving, forgiving eyes.

My first scene will likely be posted later this week!  (It'll give me time to obsess over another draft.)

Besides, someone has to donate $50 first.  ;)

Pre-blogging jitters soothed by Pixar's suicidal story

About

I was ecstatic when I was admitted into the T.V. writing program at the Canadian Film Centre. In previous years, government agencies gave CFC attendees financial support ranging from $3,000 to $15,000. However this year, because of government cutbacks, the funding available is exactly zero.

My goal is to raise $5,000 by Sept. 30, through small donations from friends and family. The money would cover FIVE months of very humble living expenses in Toronto. I know times are really tight. So I'm not looking for large contributions, but little contributions from the heart.

As a thank you, I am writing a scene from my script The Midnight Gardener for every $50 donated. Think of it as helping to write a story that would not ever get told without your support. You can read it here. Once again, thank you for all your love and support,

Sunny Oh
