Schema's summer intern Justin Ko interviews Canadian-based musician CJ Li and explores her unique upbringing, her musical inspirations, and her future career in Japan.
I am not too familiar with Japanese culture, but the more I learn about it, the more I am impressed with its traditions, and the more value I see in keeping them alive in our highly developed society.
The other day while browsing online, I discovered a unique online magazine called SNOW Magazine. It was a very worthwhile accident as this Tokyo-based publication features cool and fascinating articles covering the latest fads in art, music, technology, food, film, fashion, interior design, travel, comics, crafts, and much more!

Behold! Daddy-Eyeball of GeGeGe no Kitaro, the protagonist of a Japanese manga TV series, have just found his missing twin siblings. Who just also happen to be the mascots of London's 2012 Summer Games. No biggy. Doubtful that Daddy-Eyeball will receive the same sort of limelight. Their resemblance is uncanny, all that's left is a DNA test...and maybe a lawsuit.
Kamimura is an ageing dancer living in the south of France and giving lessons in the Japanese art form Butoh to students who come to his farm. Every summer it seems his much younger lover, Yuzuko, leaves to be in New York - her presence in Kamimura's household overlapping only briefly with that of his middle-aged wife, Akiko, and their daughter, Mayu.
In a semi-futuristic Japan, the Good For You party is in power, and their mandate is to create a healthy populous at any cost. Under the direction of Leader Healthy, the party is trying to eradicate the evils of obesity and tooth decay by banning chocolate, and all other sugary snacks. This is the premise of the anime film Chocolate Underground, directed by Takayuki Hamana, and produced by Production I.G.

While Canadians celebrate Earth Day 2010 with various events to help promote the importance of conservationism and sustainability. I love watching Asian films that challenge the conventional stereotype of the Asian-geisha-obedient female stereotype. You know, films where the female protagonist are real women, clever, strong and empowered. Historically, the depiction of women in film has had more impact on the lives of women than any other media. Likewise, it's alternate female roles that have the potential to undo much of the stereotypes we hold in our everyday lives.
Since the Vancouver 2010 Winter Games begun, Canadians have showcased an incredible amount of national pride at the events, on the streets, and basically to anyone who would listen and join in on the celebrations! I randomly interviewed people in front of Canada Place to see they think of the girls and guys of the True North Strong and Free, and what it means to be Canadian.
