A powerful, demanding form of self-expression, graffiti enables individuals to find a voice within their social space. Ma Culture! is the outcome of Jirafitti, a ten-week urban art program directed by Selena 'Ache 1' Isles, with assistance from Sterling 'Seaz' Downey. Consisting of twenty workshops altogether, Isles set out to use the medium of graffiti to educate youth, aged ten to seventeen, about the history, customs, and culture behind graffiti as a form of expression.
I am not too familiar with Japanese culture, but the more I learn about it, the more I am impressed with its traditions, and the more value I see in keeping them alive in our highly developed society.
Who does the two bronze statues stolen during the Opium War really belong to?
The other day while browsing online, I discovered a unique online magazine called SNOW Magazine. It was a very worthwhile accident as this Tokyo-based publication features cool and fascinating articles covering the latest fads in art, music, technology, food, film, fashion, interior design, travel, comics, crafts, and much more!
Director Lou Ye is no stranger to controversy. His last film, Summer Palace, was a graphic depiction of the intense and passionate relationship of two students at the fictional Beiqing University during the time of the student revolution. This feature earned him critical acclaim from Western film critics, as well as a five-year ban on all his filmmaking endeavours from the Chinese authorities. Spring Fever, Lou's latest offering, is a tribute to a powerful love hidden in a secret affair.

Kamimura is an ageing dancer living in the south of France and giving lessons in the Japanese art form Butoh to students who come to his farm. Every summer it seems his much younger lover, Yuzuko, leaves to be in New York - her presence in Kamimura's household overlapping only briefly with that of his middle-aged wife, Akiko, and their daughter, Mayu.
Says one art critic Yang Xiaoyan, "the people are pragmatic in the southern province of Guangdong, China." They don't bother themselves too much with the esoteric or academic as much as the Mandarin-speakers do. Being independent spirits, the artists of the South were quick to accept more capitalist values at the end of the '80s and change their art accordingly. But what about the '80s themselves? What defined art in the south, which did not follow suit with the northern provinces and accept the '85 New Wave Movement that became 'a campaign' up north?
Before this morning I had never read Giant Robot magazine. In fact, until a couple of weeks ago I didn't even know it existed.
The use of blackface in the fashion industry goes deeper than its historical connotations or inappropriateness. It begs the greater question, are white models being painted black in lieu of hiring black models themselves? In an industry that wants a black girl to look like a "white girl dipped in chocolate," it seems that they have finally solved their dilemma by doing just that.
How has the Fashion industry affected mainstream ideas around race and beauty?
With modeling agencies pining over models like Naomi Campbell, who is considered as the epitome of a "white model dipped in chocolate," we've noticed a serious lack of diversity within fashion. But we're dying to hear what you think. Have you or someone you know struggled to be a model, agent or designer because of ethnicity or race? How does the fashion industry or advertising shape mainstream attitudes around the "colour of beauty?" Send us your stories, perspectives, experiences and thoughts about ...
