Oy! Just Beat It! Play Review | Toronto Fringe Festival

At the recent Toronto Fringe Festival Bollywood style musical Oy! Just Beat It! surpasses the veneer of intercultural romantic comedy and unerringly embodies a century's issues about race and identity that are more than skin-deep. Ultimately, by exploring these conflicts through comedy, Oy! may just be the one to beat at "Best of the Fringe."

L'Affaire Tierney | Quebec Basher or Truthteller?

Just try to name some Canadian films from this past year. That's right, you can't. Now try to name your favourite Canadian films. Oh right, you don't have any. Either that or they were all fait au Québec, I know mine were. See the problem here?

NEW on In-Depth's BWAYRF: Ansel Brandt

Like any good Canadian citizen, Ansel Brandt has often found himself in the middle of a language divide. No, not French vs. English silly, Hakka vs. Plattdüütsch!

Babies Documentary is Cute, But Problematic

Months ago, I saw a trailer for a documentary called Babies, which follows the everyday lives of 4 babies from different parts of the world from the time that they are born until they each start walking. I will be honest, I already knew I was going to dislike what this film represented before I even walked into the theatre.

Infographic of the Day: Japan, the Strange Country | Design & Innovation | Fast Company

What comes to mind when you think of Japan? For many it's sushi or taiko drumming, but we all know Japan is far more complex than that. To mixed reviews, Kenichi Tanaka, a Japanese animation student, attempted to capture all the social quirks of Japanese life in a video called Japan: The Strange Country

Protest The Last Airbender this Thursday in Hollywood

Hollywood has a tradition of casting white actors in lieu of Asians to portray Asian characters. The tradition continues with the upcoming release of M. Night Shyamalan's The Last Airbender, the movie adaptation of the popular cartoon of the same name. Check out Angry Asian Man's take on the situation, including the pending protest/boycott, inside.

Schema Goes to the Opera | Madama Butterfly

Last week I attended Vancouver Opera's production of Madama Butterfly by Giacomo Puccini, and I was awed by the performance.

The Colour of Beauty: Post-screening thoughts

The Colour of Beauty is great in that it brings to light a very important issue in the fashion industry and the media and pop culture in general. The statistics given in the film about just how few visible minorities are seen in the modelling business is shocking for sure.... But here are some thoughts I have that bring some further discussion to the issue at hand.

Blackface in the Fashion Industry

The use of blackface in the fashion industry goes deeper than its historical connotations or inappropriateness. It begs the greater question, are white models being painted black in lieu of hiring black models themselves? In an industry that wants a black girl to look like a "white girl dipped in chocolate," it seems that they have finally solved their dilemma by doing just that.

Work For All | Week 8: The Colour of Beauty

A stunning and statuesque black woman struts down a busy urban street in the opening credits of Elizabeth St. Philip's film Colour of Beauty. In the next shots the same woman is touched up by make-up artists and hairstylists as she poses for fashion photographers. Going by the title and opening scenes alone, you might think that this film is a tribute to the successful career of the black model, and to the changing face of the fashion industry. Wrong. The first words out of the model, Renee Thompson's mouth are, "I think sometimes it's so blatantly racist it's disgusting"...

Freshly Ground Black People? Oops, says Penguin

So I read on the Post Chronicle that Penguin Australia published a cookbook called The Pasta Bible, and it had a minor typo. Penguin doesn't get what all the fuss is about, though it's, you know, apologized, or whatever. Instead of 'freshly ground black pepper', the ingredients for a recipe read 'freshly ground black people'. Whoopsy daisy!

The Dawn of Dusk: Indian Vogue

Vogue's got its heart in the right place, but the next step should be to capture the subcontinent's visible diversity, not just celebrate one kind of Indian look.

Work For All Campaign | Week 2: Boxed In

Work For All has a new short film out called Boxed In for its second week of their 10 Week Campaign, showcasing films against racism in the workplace.

Work For All Campaign | Week 1: Jaded

Jaded takes the humour right to its limit, with Jade bemoaning that she is "an invisible minority." It's a must see mockumentary that is guarantee to stir up a much needed discussion about racism at the office. Be amongst the first people to watch the film here at Schema!

Michael Phelps & Scott Lago Accuse Lainey Lui as Asian Medal-Biter

Remember the American Bronze medal snowboarder, Scott Lago, who got kicked out of Vancouver before the closing ceremony after some rather scandalous party photos popped up all over the internet? Poor guy, eh?

The 50 Most Racist Movies (You Didn't Think Were Racist)

Found this on angry asian man and was pretty surprised. There are some movies on this comprehensive list that I had never even considered as racist! Check it out. Thanks Phil!

Colour line bites again

Wendi Muse critiqued in New Moon: Old Story?, on Racialicious.com, that anyone who is familiar with American (and I would argue Canadian, as well) films and pop culture would know that someone of colour hardly ever gets the white girl/guy in the end.

Interracial Couple Denied Marriage License

I found this article from Phil Yu's Angry Asian Man and didn't quite know what to think. There's a guy, a justice of the peace, who says that he refuses to give out marriage licenses to interracial couples. Believe it or not, this man lives in New Orleans, in America. Evidently no place, not even the United States, is completely devoid of bigotry. Sad, but it's the cold, hard, ridiculous truth. Being in Canada, we live in a fairly liberal country and I wonder if anyone in a position of power could get away with crap like this. Is there really any good excuse for being a straight-up racist?
