Jocelyn Gan, Schema Magazine's much loved Editor-in-Chief of Daily Dose, was originally born in Malaysia, but spent most of her years in Delta, British Columbia. In the four years since she has joined Schema, Jocelyn has become known as the cat lover of the team. Schema Magazine sat down with Jocelyn to get inside the mind of its very own Overlord of Daily Dose.
Schema Magazine: How did you find out about Schema?
Jocelyn Gan: I came across Schema during my undergrad at Simon Fraser University. I'm an English major and there was a call for a Book Review position at Schema. I had initially applied for that, but instead I ended up being a Daily Dose contributor. That was over four years ago. And the rest, they say, is history! I also edited the People 2 Watch profiles section.
SM: What is it about Schema that you first connected with?
JG: I personally connect with Schema because I have found a group of like-minded people, who could identify with my complex background, while living in a Western society.
I grew up in North Delta—some would call it suburbia heaven. And it most definitely is.
All throughout my elementary and high school years, I was usually one of only a few Asian students. Almost all my childhood friends are white. During those young years, I struggled with accepting my culture, where I was born, where my parents and grandparents were born.
I couldn't really have conversations about my challenges over identity with my white friends. Finding Schema was like finding a sort of home for me. I was introduced to people who has similar views and experiences about growing up in a pretty mainstream Western community. It was so refreshing and it really made me want to connect with my background more and further appreciate my heritage.

SM: Why do you love cats? Are you an owner?
JG: Why do I love cats?! Cats are awesome.
If I could, I would be a cat. I would want to be one a big, fluffy, grey and white cat. Maybe an orange tabby. I've never had a cat. Which is a bit strange, for such an intense cat lover as I am. I have a dog instead. Of course I love cat Youtube videos. I can spend hours on that site looking at cat videos.
Cats just get me. Unlike men. Ha!
SM: What type of books do you read?
JG: I'm actually a fan of all types of literature. I don't have a specific favorite genre, but I do love anything—a story or a biograph—that I can just indulge myself in.
It's all about connecting with the characters. I especially love a good cry. It's such a girly thing to say, but I love a good cry when I read.

SM: For those meeting you for the first time, how would you describe yourself?
JG: I've been told I am a very sarcastic person and it can be pretty evident in my writing at times. I think I have a pretty good sense of humour—but doesn't everyone think that? I really do though! OK, this kind of feels like a dating ad ... "reasons why you should date me."
When Jocelyn isn't busy managing the team of Daily Dose contributors, taking care of Schema's interns, or revering in cats, you'll likely catch her watching CSI marathons or dancing in her room. Whatever she's doing, you'll find her having a great time! And, please, no calls for dates.
