Winter DVD Hot-List

Many people, like me, might be embarrassed to admit just how much time we spend watching movies. With my collection of over 1,000 films (not including television series) and an unwavering obsession in analyzing anything ever shown in a theatre, I spend very little time outdoors and more time vegetating in front of a screen. I have gotten to the point where sunlight burns my eyes, but, as compensation, I have acquired a sharp-minded ability: I can recommend the very best movies. Herewith is my list of the best films recently released on DVD.

The Diving Bell and the Butterfly
Director: Julian Schnabel

France, 2009

Synopsis: This biopic, based on the memoir of the same name, tells the remarkable tale of Jean-Dominique Bauby, the celebrated editor of French ELLE magazine, who suffered a stroke at 43 and was paralyzed with "locked in" syndrome for the rest of his life.

The visuals and overall composition of this film are far too breathtaking to overlook.

It's a must-see because ... the filmmaking is visually stunning and lead actor Mathieu Amalric gives an emotional performance as Bauby. At the beginning, an incredible scene shot from the protagonist's point-of-view engaged me on a very personal level--something that rarely happens. From then on, the movie flows like ambient music with poetic visuals and a heart-wrenching story. It's guaranteed to bring at least one tear to your eye.

Mat's Cast/Crew star:
Janusz Kaminski - DOP/Cinematographer

Under the Same Moon/"La Misma Luna"
Director: Patricia Riggen

Mexico, 2007

Synopsis: Rosario, living illegally in Los Angeles, is struggling to support her family who lives in Mexico. When her mother passes away, Rosario's son, Carlitos, is left without a caretaker. Circumstances force Carlitos to embark on an arduous journey across the border as he searches for his mother.

A very moving and believable performance from such a young child actor.

It's a must-see because ... the story warms the heart. When I first saw the determination and fearlessness in nine-year old Carlitos' face, I could feel the strong bond between mother and son without ever needing to see the two together. The devotion they have to each other is fueled by a great story and strong lead performances that will undoubtedly have you cheering by the end of it all.

Mat's Cast/Crew star:
Adrian Alonso - Lead Actor - "Carlitos"

Young People Fucking/"Y.P.F."
Director: Martin Gero

Canada, 2009

Synopsis: This movie is not porn. Please believe me. It is a movie about sex, and it follows four couples and one threesome and it all occurs in one night. The hilarity of it all comes from the dialogue and the characters' stories, which come into focus as the night draws to an end.

A witty script that stuck to a tight budget but still delivered good laughs.

It's a must-see because ... despite its indelicate title, this film is carefully crafted to make you laugh. Now, I may be slightly biased here because Martin Gero is Canadian, and I tend to blindly support anything Canadian, but the script for this movie is innovative and original, and, although the actors are mostly unrecognizable, the performances are light-hearted and genuine.

Mat's Cast/Crew star:
Martin Gero and Aaron Abrams - Writers

Director: Thomas McCarthy

U.S.A., 2007

Synopsis: This movie truly begins when sixty-two-year-old Walter Vale is forced to travel Manhattan to attend a conference. There, Walter finds a young couple living in his apartment as a result of a real estate scam. After Walter allows Tarek and his girlfriend, Zainab, to stay with him temporarily, he begins to develop a strong friendship with Tarek. This relationship helps Walter in rebuild the passion in his life--something he desperately needs.

A heartfelt performance from Jenkins, whom we usually see in the background of comedy movies.

It's a must-see because ... of the exceptional chemistry between Walter (Richard Jenkins) and Tarek (Haaz Sleiman), as well as the beautifully restrained performance by Danai Jekesai Gurira as Zainab. The story is very moving, and deftly explores issues of immigration, culture, and identity. And did I forget to mention that Jenkins was nominated for Best Lead Actor at the Oscars for this film?

Mat's Cast/Crew star:
Richard Jenkins - Lead Actor - "Walter Vale"

Planet B-boy
Director: Benson Lee

U.S.A, 2007

Synopsis: An eye-opening documentary that dives into the dynamic culture of b-boying. The film follows several compelling dancers and their journey to the "Battle of the Year" finals, where crews from 18 nations vie for the title of World Champion.

The Canadian-American Korean filmmaker did an admirable job of finding dynamic subjects and crafted a very well-thought out film.

It's a must-see because ... for those who know nothing about b-boying and its culture and history, this movie is a fun way to learn. And for those who already know, this is an ode to the art of breakdancing.

Mat's Cast/Crew star:
Benson Lee - Director

» Mat's movie-term for this release:

Background movie: a movie seen so many times that one can play it while doing work and still not be distracted. As in, Pulp Fiction, where you can already recite the passage from Ezekiel and thus your attention is no longer required.

Example: "I can recite the Samuel L. Jackson's passage from Ezekiel in Pulp Fiction"
"You're a loser, but that's a great background movie for you"
