Next Gen Pinoy Cuisine Ahoy!

Unlike your local DJ or bboy competitions, Filipinos are not really well represented in the restaurant and cuisine department, let alone in the tapas or izakaya style joints. The newly opened Rekados Grill, Hotpot & Tapas (which according to On Point Production's el Presidente, Lee Zamora "means food that goes with the main course...like side dishes..."), off Main & King Ed in Vancouver, fills that gap in presenting Filipino food in the modern tapas/izakaya context in a poshy kind of setting.
Our night there started off in authentic Pinoy fashion as...
... the individuals sur-named Lee, McKay, Chung & Kondo stood around waiting for the 2 Zamoras and the reservation maker, Escalante.
Having never been to a Filipino restaurant (though have attended many a Pinoy BBQ), I was pretty excited and curious to check things out but had no idea this place was that kind of contemporary tapas/izakya style restaurant.
And like the Guus, Hapa Izakayas & Chopstick Cafes, many of the dishes offered at Rekados offer a modern twist on traditional fare. So my first time trying adobo chicken wasnt so old school but new. The 8 dood eating crew also had kare-kare (peanut sauce stew with beef n tripe n veghad), sisig (a fried pork dish), crispy pata (roast pork), BBQed tilapia, short ribs and other skewers, lumpia shanghai (egg rolls), pancit bihon (thin rice noodles and veggies) and a few rounds of San Miguel brewskies.
Though you're probably better off having the Chinese and Malay/Indonesian influenced dishes at a Chinese or Malay/Indonesian restaurant, I really dug the sisig and adobo (as well as one of the waitress'). The restaurant soundstrack included ditties from the Roots and Common to Joao Gilberto & St. Germain (w/o cuts or scratches though).
