Jagshemash! Nu-school racism or post-PC humour for the new century?

Borat.jpg

Either way, Borat is coming to (N.) America with his self-titled flick: Borat: Cultural Learnings of America for Make Benefit Glorious Nation of Kazakhstan which has already hit the Toronto Film fest and should be opening round here sometime this fall. Now, who the fck is this guy (if you havent seen the trailer for his movie yet or seen him introduce the Pussy Cat Dolls on the MTV Euro Awards)?

Borat is a character created by English comedian Sacha Baron Cohen (who is also behind Ali G) who is supposed to be from the Central Asian country of, well, Kazakhstan (a former Soviet republic). Now, if you've bothered to check some of the links here, it isnt all that surprising that Borat has stirred up some controversy here.

The Jewish comedian (...Cohen, rememba) has been accused of anti-semitism by the Anti-Defamation League and threatened by legal action from the government of Kazakhstan itself. Now Ali G. was also no stranger to controversy himself but brother Borat is taking things a level up by actually aiming to (sorta) represent an actual country and people. But the choice of his nation to represent is strategic as most westerners have not even heard of Kazakhstan prior to Borat which seems to give Cohen the freedom to expose westerners of this lack of knowledge and/or ignorance.

As an example, Borat performed to an unknowing American audience in Tuscon, Arizona event and reworded the lyrics to a famous country song to "Throw the Jew down the well/So my country can be free/You must grab him by his horns/Then we have a big party" and while some of the audience shocked at this, others apparently applauded. Now if thats not somekind of an exposition, i dont know what is...though as you may have guessed again, not everyone is going to appreciate being on the butt-end of this method (most likely starting with the Kazakhstani peoples).

But Borat has hammed it on, even responding to the Kazakhstani goverment's legal threats with THIS. And much of Borat's interaction with the American people and beyond is simply for pure comic relief, he still seems to have a thing for exposing the patriotism and other things from our neighbors to the south (Talking to Americans, anyone?).

Is this a little unfair, punking out unsuspecting Americans like that? Yeah, i'd say so as well as it being dam funny and very socially productive at the same time.

As a last note, the director of the upcoming Borat movie is Larry Charles who has written for the upcoming Mark Walhberg produced TV show Entourage, Mad about You, Larry David's Curb Your Enthusiasm and that other Larry David penned show, Seinfield.
