By Sally Lim

I have always enjoyed theatre and although I have seen many stage shows, I have noticed that there are not very many Asian people on stage in Vancouver.  I thought to myself that with such a diverse population why, in this particular industry, is the visible minority so under-represented in Vancouver?   In theatre, roles for Asian Actors were mostly historical and in non-race specific roles, Asian Actors were not being cast perhaps due to lack of experience from not being cast (catch 22).  I was reborn when I stumbled across an organization called Vancouver Asian Canadian Theatre that produced the Sex in Vancouver serial romantic comedies.

This theatre show portrayed Asian Actors in a contemporary setting, used multi-media components to attract a younger audience, told a story that identifies with anyone who has dated and dispelled a huge stereotype about Asian men, that Asian men are not sexy, desirous or considered romantic leads.  Sex in Vancouver did all that and more!  I actually cared about the characters and that is why theatre-goers were flocking back to see what happens to them and to cheer them on to happiness which everyone desires in life.  The shows were not just for Asian audiences but for anyone who has been searching for love and can laugh at its ups & downs.

BRAVO to the actors who were great and so very talented to bring such a realistic portrayal of their character to stage. Peter Leung, the director was a wizard in pulling all the multi-media components, actors and music together to create a thoroughly entertaining show.

Sex in Vancouver has returned for a special engagement for 3 days only, April 10, 11 & 12 at the Roundhouse Performance Centre.   For more information, visit www.vact.ca
