Views of an abandoned Japanese Island

gunkunjima.jpgSee some amazing photos of this abandoned Japanese island.

From the write up:

Off the westernmost coast of Japan, is an island called "Gunkanjima" that is hardly known even to the Japanese. Long ago, the island was nothing more than a small reef. Then in 1810, the chance discovery of coal drastically changed the fate of this reef. As reclamation began, people came to live here, and through coal mining the reef started to expand continuously. Befor long, the reef had grown into an artificial island of one kilometer (three quarters of a mile) in perimeter, with a population of 5300. Looming above the ocean, it appeared a concrete labyrinth of many-storied apartment houses and mining structures built closely together. Seen from the ocean, the silhouette of the island closely resembled a battleship - so, the island came to be called Gunkanjima, or Battleship island.

Fried Dough from Around the World

frieddough.jpg Here's how you know those Atkins people are nuts... people from all over the world since the beginning forever, have been putting sugar/flour and any and all combinations of the allegedly evil, evil carbs into hot oil, drowning it in sugar and eating it up.
Call them dougnut, call them Assaleak (Alaska), call them Farutas (Portugal), call them Koeksisters (Africa), call them the orgasmic light of St. Krispy Kreme, call them whatever you like... I, ala Alton, call them... Good Eats.

Jean-George's new Chinese restaurant

66.jpg Yusheng writes:

"Finally tried Jean-Georges Vongerichten's Chinese restaurant 66 last night. I've been curious to taste JGV's take on Chinese food ever since it opened. I went in with high hopes since I happen to think that for a city so obsessed with Chinese food (and with so many Chinese people), New York sure has a lot of crappy Chinese restaurants. In fact, one of my least favorite things to hear from friends is: "Hey! Let's eat Chinese tonight!""

Jean-Georges Vongerichten, a top French chef in NYC, who has also opened Thai and Indian inspired shops, is now tackling Chinese food. As much as I would love to applaud such multicultural efforts and ambitions, my trusted gourmand YuSheng gave it a lack luster review. Sounded like it was just a regular Chinese restaurant but packaged prettier and WAY more expensive. Jean-George expensive, to be exact.

Clean - Movie Review

clean.jpg

In an opening sequence featuring a bland Hamilton landscape in contrast with a lush and intoxicated underground music scene, we are introduced to Cheung’s Emily Wang. She is an electric lady with a shock of black hair and a Kate Moss figure. Emily sustains herself on the afterglow of her rocker husband’s career and the catharsis of heroine. When her husband dies of an overdose with junk that she had bought for both of them, she is forced to live with the implicit guilt and the responsibility of cleaning up her life to get her son back.
