YIN Magazine - New mag targeted at young Asian women
Yin magazine launches this month.
According to their press release: "YIN is for the young, intelligent Asian woman with a strong sense of personal style. "
The first issue covers topics like:
- Who was the most well dressed Ninja in anime?
- Astroboy designer Hiroaki Ohya takes on the fashion world.
- Top ten favorite airport goodbye scenes in movie history.
Hot dog! Call me a sassy 16year old asian girl, cause I'd want to read all of that too!
Yin Magazine
Can they find a MORE "white-man's-idea-of-a-beautiful-ORIENTAL" model/actress/whoever-hell-she-is than the one on their debut cover???

Really? You think? Honestly, i am not too intouch with what the "white-man's-idea-of-a-beautiful-ORIENTAL"
looks like...
example: which attractive asian woman WON'T fit that description? (keeping in mind this magazine is for young asian girls).
can we start a thread on this? give me some links to "white-man's-idea-of-a-beautiful-oriental" and "not-at-all-a-white-man's-idea-of-a-beautiful-oriental" and i post them? or maybe not...
and um... what's with the "oriental?" who are you suppose to be? Bill Parcell? (joking lys... joking...) (comment refers to http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/news/story?id=1817592)

I think what lys is trying to say is that the model (Chiaki Furiyama) is similar to many highly publicized asian stars in North America that are considered to be pretty (ex. Lucy Liu). However, I disagree that Chiaki Kuriyama fits into that category...alas, we all have our own tastes no? Besides, I believe she was not only chosen due to her image, but also due to her recent high exposure because of Kill Bill.
Through personal experience, many choices by caucasian men, their definition of beauty for asian women are not the same for many asian men.
I'm not sure, but with my experience, many asian men prefer the HUGE eyes, cutesy look, while caucasian men prefer the smaller eyes, almost stereotypical asian look. Of course, everybody has their own tastes...as I have a caucasian friend who would lick the ground that Hamasakai Ayumi walks upon....as would I....oops did I type that?

Uh, ya, small eyes, long straight hair (with bangs no less, looks just like a little doll), I think she fits that category fairly well....
Now Ayumi.... she is so cute and so freaky looking at the same time. Have you seen pictures of her pre-fame? Her eyes were regular-sized back then. Now she looks like a real-life manga character.
Tho I said "oriental" mockingly (hence the all caps), it seems like one of those words that people just decided to get pissed off about for no good reason. The word itself is not bad, it just brings up memories of the past when the damn Occidentals used to look down on the Orientals, that's all. Somebody is going to post a 500-word dissertation on why it is offensive now, isn't it..........

ha ha.... well, you'all who know about my shirt line... should know that i for one, will definitely NOT be easily offended by "oriental" in that context... :)

- I dunno, she looks pretty much like the Japanese Man's idea of a beatiful Japanese model/actress/etc to me.
Have you seen japanese magazines for japanese people? I coulda sworn they all feature girls just like so...

Who are we to say what White men find attractive in Asian women? To say that any one group of people like this or that in another group of people is highly reductive and frankly, a little juvenile. If we really examine the contemporary relationships between White men and Asian women, we will find that these relationships are as imbalanced, crazy and psycho-sexual as the relationships between anyone and anyone else. Certainly, we're all familiar with the White man who wants the exotic tiger lily who serves him tea on her knees while simultaneously giving him head, but really, I think we've evolved beyond that (and besides, that poor sot isn't getting laid anyway, so it doesn't matter). I'm a strong Asian woman and I don't care what men, White or otherwise, do or do not find attractive in me. So what? To constantly worry about what the majority thinks of us immediately puts us in the position of the other and the viewed, and limits our agency. Let's partner with the men (or wo!
men) we want to partner with and leave the rest to be pondered by BLOG writers late at night.
