Video Game Rock Stars

Video Game playing is turning into a big dollar, televised sport league complete with stars in Korea.

"Last year, Mr. Lim made about $300,000 from player fees and commercials. Another top earner, Hung Jin-Ho, whose fingers are insured for $60,000, recently signed a three-year deal with telecom provider KTF Co. that will pay him $480,000 altogether."

"Starcraft devotees study Mr. Lim's moves as chess players study Garry Kasparov. A DVD detailing Mr. Lim's winning plays sold 30,000 copies in South Korea last year, outselling the movie "Matrix Revolutions.""

Wow, in the mean time, I will just keep training for the day when someone develops a pro league for aimless web-surfing.

That's pretty interesting stuff - how government policy and economics resulted in a nation of kids highly adept at online gaming, which spawned not only a subculture, but became mainstream culture.

It fundamentally changed the way people communicate. I was reading some academic writing over some guy's shoulder on the bus about the experiences of Asian exchange students in Canada, and some surveys report local LAN cafes serve as a hub and critical meeting place where exchange students from the same country meet online through games like CS and Starcraft, and end up fratenizing. It's funny how something as trivial as online gaming becomes so instrumental to society as some know it.
