Diversity Ad for IKEA Canada (by zig)

Maybe it's just me, but could this be the first time a black couple has been portrayed in a North American IKEA ad? In the last couple of weeks, television sets in Canada have been sharing in the inside voice of a rather affluent couple in an ad for IKEA, the Swedish-owned international home products retailer. IKEA ads have always been creative, quirky and very memorable. Sometimes even racy (see below)! Ikea ads however are not really known to acknowledge the ethno-cultural diversity of their customers. Perhaps that's about to change.

From Stimulant:

This spot for Ikea Canada by zig utilizes the voice of David Hyde Pierce (a.k.a. Niles Crane from TV's Frasier) to help exude the sense of serenity that some might feel when surrounded by an organized, accident-free home environment. Wait, accident free? As this commercial illustrates, Ikea products like the PAX wardrobe system help to avoid shoe avalanches. That's right. They thought of that.

Knowing that everything on TV is intentional, especially in advertising, I wonder if this ad would have been imaginable prior to Barack Obama's administration? Was this meant to appeal to a new public psyche that sees a visibly diverse couple as the quintessential North American consumer? Or has the Toronto-and-Chicago-based idea agency zig recognized the make up of Canada's mainstream? Either way, it's about time!
