PLEASE VOTE FOR ME, a documentary by Weijun Chen, is out on DVD. The doc looks at an experiment in democracy -- at the third grade level -- following students as they elect a new class monitor at Evergreen Primary School in Wuhun, China.
This is the first time that these students have been exposed to a democratic election process and a variety of other issues, from the very idea of how democracy works to China's One-Child policy.
At school, the candidates, Luo Lei (the current class monitor), Cheng Cheng, and Xu Xiaofei, make speeches, promises, and plan tactics to try and win over their classmates' votes. The doc also follows each candidate in their home life, where overzealous parents coach their kids on how to campaign, exposing the pressure it places on the kids.
This 55-minute documentary first premiered on TV earlier this year. Grab yourself a copy here. And watch a clip of Please Vote For Me (under the cut)!
