Kissing Pokemones | Chile's teen urban tribe

pokemons3yen.jpgThe POKEMONES' look is androgynous -- spiked hair, dyed hair, thick Goth eyeliner, low-slung jeans, multiple piercings. A look that sounds a bit like the description of an anime character, no? The Pokemones may take their name from the "pocket monsters," but in Chile they're an urban tribe of teens aged 12-18 known for their afternoon raves, tech gear, shared kissing, and political apathy.

Sound like teens the world over? Well, yes...but conservative Chile is reeling from the Pokemones who are blatantly going against their parents' conservative mores -- Chile, after all, didn't approve of divorce until 2004 and abortion is still illegal. The Pokemones' favorite pastimes are to gather at a "ponceo" (rave) to hangout and partake in a kiss-a-thon, regardless of gender, to tally up to see who can kiss the most people. And although there's no drugs or alcohol involved -- so they say...yeah, right -- the Pokemones also enjoy full-clothed simulated sex on the dance floor.

Sounds like a typical highschool party. Maybe the Chilean leaders would benefit from watching American Pie -- after all, Pokemones won't seem so "bad" in comparison to the teens in that movie. Maybe.

Sounds like the "all-ages" dances in Vancouver ... minus the cos-play and techno music.
