Fresh Face | The Go! Team
If double-dutch chants, cartoon action theme songs, early hip-hop, and '70s funk are your thing, then you'll find peppy bliss in THE GO! TEAM.
The Brighton, England-based six-piece band began mixing live instrumentation and samples in 2000. Inspired by Sonic Youth-style guitars and horn music, founding member Ian Parton, along with Chi Fukami Taylor, Kaori Tsuchida, Jamie Bell, Sam Dook, and Nkechi Ka Egenamba (aka Ninja), recorded their debut album, Thunder, Lightning, Strike, in Parton's parents' kitchen. The album, filled with flashy, attitude-driven dance music, was nominated for a 2005 Mercury Prize, and the lead single off the album, "Ladyflash," topped U.K. charts.
In 2007, The Go! Team released their follow-up album, Proof of Youth, which showcased a more complex and mature version of the band's original sound. Singles "Grip Like a Vice" and "Milk Crisis" are heavy on Ninja's rap skills as well as Parton, Dook, and Taylor all on drums.
Fans of Brazilian band CSS will definitely be drawn to The Go! Team's similar, exciting mish-mash of instrumental dance beats. Catch The Go! Team as they finish off the summer on the European festival circuit, and take a listen to them (under the cut)!
