Cabaret, the 1966 Broadway hit is now on stage at Stratford. One of the most renowned musicals, about Berlin in the sex, drugs and anything-goes 1930s, its storyline and themes still resonate today. Fred Ebb's timeless lyrics and the music of John Kander breathe new life into the colourful cast of characters.
New Years Eve 1929, Clifford Bradshaw (Sean Arbuckle) and American writer finds himself in Berlin where he meets Ernst Ludwig (Cory O'Brien) who helps him secure a room and persuades him to visit the Kit Kat Klub, where he meets the vivacious Sally Bowles (Trish Lindstrom) an English cabaret dancer. As Bradshaw befriends Lugwig, Bowles, and a host of other characters and makes a life for himself in the Berlin, the darkness of the burgeoning Nazi Party arises and changes the landscape and lives of the characters forever.
While Cabaret's ending may seem a little rushed to some, the musical numbers, and the ever-relevant themes of politics, love and nationalism make this musical a must see. Performances run until October 25.
