A New Face for Beijing | RCI | Web Series
All eyes are on Beijing now that the Games of the 29th Olympiad are underway, having commenced on 8/8/08 at 8:08:08 pm. (That's a whole lotta eights, and for good reason: eight is an auspicious number in Chinese culture, as the Mandarin word for eight is bā which sounds similar to fā, the word for 'prosper' or 'wealth.' )
But China's got a brand new face these days, and it just may (or may not) surprise you. RCI viva's web series A NEW FACE FOR BEIJING follows Toronto-native Jennifer Hsiung, 25, a recent immigrant to the country, as she explores the mounting pressures and excitement of the Olympic Games in a changing China. Ms. Hsuing, a sports anchor at CCTV, talks to locals and immigrants, young and old, and foreigners of Chinese-descent such as herself about their experiences.
Directed and filmed by Ms. Hsiung's sister Tiffany, the series is smart, entertaining and refreshingly honest.
The website is also fully trilingual (does that word make anyone else think dirty thoughts? no?) with subtitles. Stay tuned for the upcoming episodes Opening Day (Aug. 11th) and After the Games (early Sept.)
