MelissaClemente.jpgLooking to use Asian Heritage Month to justify splurging on a new set of earrings?

Every once in a while we stumble across something that so clearly defines ethnic cool. The innovative blend of Filipino influence on Melissa Clemente's ultra-contemporary jewelry designs are case in point. More than just eye-candy, each piece is a visual conversation about material and form. View the beautiful photography on her website, www.melissaclementedesigns.com.

Launched in November, Melissa Clemente's Fall Winter 2007 collection Anihan [a-nee-han] (Tagalog for harvest), is inspired by the materials that are indigenous to the mountain regions of the northern Philippines. Most recently, her pieces were showcased at NAAAP Toronto's Dress for Success Fund Raiser and the 2008 L'Oréal Fashion Week in Toronto.

Find her online, selling via her busy etsy shop, or find her at her studio and gallery in the Kapisanan Phillipine Centre, 167 Augusta Ave, Toronto. Melissa Clemente Designs will be showcased in the Ottawa Fashion Week from May 22 to May 24, 2008.

Melissa Clemente Designs products are made in Toronto, Canada with some special imports from the Philippines with our company’s unique style using innovative materials. The make up of our pieces vary from semi precious stone, recycled glass, surgical steel and brass to organic materials including variations of wood, sea bamboo, meteorite, mother of pearl and coral. To keep jewelry looking good, protect jewelry from chemicals, sunlight and extreme temperatures. Chlorine and related chemicals can severely discolor and damage jewelry. Put jewelry on after using cosmetics, hairspray or perfumes to avoid contact with substances and chemicals which may cause damage, discoloring, fading or dulling. Store jewelry separately so it will not scratch, become damaged or tangled with other jewelry. (From www.melissaclementedesigns.com)

Melissa Clemente Bio
After traveling to the UK, Melissa Clemente returned to Canada seeking to fill a creative void. Lead designer of Melissa Clemente Designs, has been creating her one-of-a-kind signature pieces since 2002. Drawing inspiration from her cultural Filipino background and her artistic family and friends the young 30 year old designer looks to the environment around her for inspiration constantly. Coming from an artistically nurturing family and community, Clemente is heavily influenced by the Filipino art forms of costuming, folk dance, and mythology. Her designs and style are natural, focusing on the fluidity and movement of each piece of jewelry and its placement on the body.

“I believe that details make the difference. The objective is not to wear combinations or coordinates that are pre-meditated by someone else. The idea is to be more intrepid with our fashion sense using the simplest accenting. I’d like to encourage women to own their look, be comfortable and most certainly, have fun with it." Each piece in her 2008 collection will enhance an overall look. Melissa Clemente Designs also aims to challenge the more conventional perceptions of accessory considerations. These pieces are as much a statement on a runway as they are sculptures that any curator would be inclined to recruit for an exhibit. Clearly, experimental couture lives at the bottom of this designer’s heart. With a background in sterling metal work, she has organized and participated in numerous trade shows and showcases as well as worked alongside various Toronto artist collectives.
