Krazy: The Delirious World of Anime + Comics + Video Games + Art | Vancouver Art Gallery | May 17- Sept 7

krazy_big.jpgSome pretentious art folks would tell you art galleries are for historical art pieces; that is, "high art." Yet there are others who don't really care about all that stuff and just like to read comic books and video games. But it's all art, right? Or would combining the two extremes be... crazy?

The Vancouver Art Gallery (VAG) doesn't think so. From now until September 7th, the VAG has a dynamic new exhibit called KRAZY! The Delirious World of Anime + Comics + Video Games + Art. It's the first exhibition of its kind, a groundbreaking project that offers unique and dynamic insight into the world of comics, animated cartoons, anime, manga, graphic novels, computer/video games and visual art.

Some of the most influential and inspiring artists from the past century have come from these "popular culture" genres, like Art Spiegelman (Maus), Lynda Barry (One! Hundred! Demons!), Shigeru Miyamoto (creator of Mario, Donkey Kong and The Legend of Zelda), Nick Park (Wallace and Gromit), Iwatani Toru (Pac-Man) and Harvey Kurtz man (Mad).

An art gallery is celebrating these amazing artists? Maybe that's not so crazy, after all.

They’ve fill our visual and cultural world, so it’s pretty rad the VAG is featuring this exhibit, one of the largest exhibitions to be featured at the gallery, covering two floors. Unlike some of the pop art of the past, this exhibit is not about the ironies of low art, or a commentary about the defecation of art by mass production, but it celebrates the visual aesthetic of modern graphic art and its history. So toss out any notions of what “art” should be, and just sit back and enjoying all the KRAZY-ness.

KRAZY will move on to New York City next year.

The exhibition is organized by the Vancouver Art Gallery with co-curators Bruce Grenville, Tim Johnson, Kiyoshi Kusumi, Art Spiegelman, Seth, Will Wright, Toshiya Ueno and exhibition design by Atelier Bow Wow.

BRUCE GRENVILLE at the VIEW Conference 2008 – Turin, Italy

I think that you would be interested by this announcement, and ask that you include it in the news portion of your site.

Bruce Grenville is Senior Curator at the Vancouver Art Gallery (1997 - present). Most recently he conceived and developed the 2008 exhibition KRAZY! The Delirious World of Anime + Comics + Video Games + Art. This talk documents the making of a ground-breaking exhibition that presents, for the first time, a comparative history of comics, graphic novels, animated cartoons, manga, anime, video games and visual art, brought together in a single exhibition to explore their history,
their interrelation and their future trajectory. This largescale exhibition offers new insights into the history and future of visual culture. The exhibition raises fundamental questions about the changing nature of visual culture and the global importance of these media.
