From the International Herald Tribute: "Meet Jasmine, the heroine of OGGI FORSE NON AMMAZZO NESSUNO (Perhaps I Won't Kill Anyone Today), a novel by Randa Ghazy (which has yet to be translated into English) that gives a multiethnic spin to the popular chick-lit genre. At the same time, the title's tagline - "light tales of a young Muslim woman who, oddly enough, is not a terrorist" - is a tip-off that deeper broodings are in store.
The author claims that the work is not autobiographical, though Ghazy, like her heroine, is an Italian-born 20-year-old of Egyptian extraction raised in a traditional Muslim household. It's not an easy act to master. Straddling two often-opposing cultures, "you're never calm, never serene," Ghazy said, admitting to considerable inner turmoil.
And most young women, regardless of their cultural or ethnic extraction, will relate to family feuds caused by generational gaps, or the career-over-children conundrum, or the debate over virginity; and many have agonized that their dreams and aspirations could crumble under the pressure of social obligations." Oregon-based folk musician M. Ward's song Chinese Translation--from the album Post-War--has been described as "truly timeless". Vanity Fair stated the album's message was a response to the question, "How will America heal once (if) this craze in Iraq is over". A gentle melody with narrative lyrics, the accompanying video for "Chinese Translation" is decidedly quirky. (go under the cut for video).

Once upon a time, sushi was considered that "weird food made of raw fish that them Japanese folks eat...lazy bums, can't even bother to cook their fish." Somehow, this raw fish stuff became a global phenomenon. (*poor fish, poor ocean*) And up around the corner springs another sushi joint. (*wrinkle nose*) What people think passes as sushi at least. The poseurs have memorized the sushi vocab into their everyday lexicon: hamachi, tamago, amaebi, unagi, toro, maguro. And no, california rolls and yam rolls are not really sushi, please.
All in all, sushi is an art in the motherland. Sushi chefs apprentice for years and years before they get to even handle some nori; they cook the sushi rice to perfection for the first year or so, then maybe they can handle the fish...maybe.
But looky here, writer Sasha Issenberg looks into the sushi craze in his book, The Sushi Economy: Globalization and The Making of a Modern Delicacy:

CBC Media archivist ANU SAHOTA brings to life flashback treasures exclusively found in the CBC Archives through a daily blog. Throughout the month of May, CBC's Asian Heritage Month archive blog "will feature excerpts from CBC Radio and Television programs of the past with the aim of complementing the many AHM events scheduled across the country."
For those who have been looking for the true spirit of Asian Heritage Month, check out the wonderful clips that have captured the stories, history and experiences of Canadians of Asian descent ... including those who have rejected being pigeon-holed as "Asian Canadian." Rascalz's Red 1 goes solo with Beg For Nothing
One of Canada's pioneering hip hop groups and also undisputed Van-City on the map establishers, the Rascalz's Red 1 has gone solo and his first single, No Fuss is making the rounds on the waves and net now. The featured vocalist is no stranger to collaborations with the Vancouver MC as he did the hook on the Rascalz's Vancouver anthem Top of the World - reggae star, Barrington Levy. The No Fuss video with a Caribbean looking locale also features another very special Caribbean guest with a cameo by Damian Marley - a hookup no doubt put together by Direct Current Media's Sol Guy who's other artist K'naan toured with Marley in Europe. Guy was also manager to the Rascalz and K-os.

Sourced from Shanghaiist: "A CCTV.com 'report' entitled "UNIQUENESS OF 10 HOT FEMALE STARS IN CHINA" was recently brought to our attention. It had us laughing out loud (but it also might help explain why China has a soaring suicide rate among females)."
Some of the "insights" CCTV has prescribed include...About Gong Li (right photo) - "Gong Li, a traditional Chinese beauty, especially in the eyes of foreigners. In the Chinese perception, she is "average." Shortcomings; her face is a little long and her lips are a little thick." About Zhang Ziyi )left photo)- "Shortcomings: her top lip is thin and lower lip is thick. So she looks a little stubborn and not easy to deal with." The list also includes: Zhang Jingchu ("big jaw"), Zhao Wei ("big mouth, a big nose and a big face"), Liu Yifei ("eyes are not expressive"), Huang Shengyi ("has a horse face"), Zhou Xun ("her mouth looks like an old lady's"), Zhang Baizhi ("her voice is like a weight lifter"), Xu XiYuan ("big ears"), Xu Xidi ("intelligence rather than beauty").
Read more "insights" and see their photos @ China Central Television International (CCTV).
