Definition of "Valentines Day" for the single souls: "over-rated", "boring", "depressing", "dingy affair", "bitter", "expensive", "BLAH"...
Hmm, well even if Cupid with his adorable little wings and magical bow and arrow can't change your mind about the amorous and romantic sentiments of Valentine's Day, then perhaps doing some "charity" work will justify even a slight bit of enthusiasm from your otherwise cynical position on the occasion.
The 4th annual C.A.C (Canadianized Asian Club) Dating Auction is once again being held at Simon Fraser University by the Canadianized Asian Club on Wednesday, February 14th, 2007 at Convocation Mall. What started as an event idea from a group of 1st year Executives, has turned into one of CAC's pillar and most prominent event that raised close to $2000 for charity last year.
The concept is this: through campus recruitment and word-of-mouth, auctionees are chosen, screened (sanity evaluation included, thank goodness), and their profiles placed on the auction's website (where prebids are accepted). On the day of the event, the auctionees go on stage one by one, do a little talent if they have one, and the bidding begins! Minimum bid starts at $5 and has gone up to $600 one year. Winning bidders receive a complimentary dinner and date with the auctionee, prizes from sponsors, clubbing tickets, chocolates and flowers. The 2 hour event is complete with a hiphop DJ, intersession dance performance, professional MCs, and a rowdy crowd of University and romance-believers willing to donate their petty change (yea..$100+ worth of change..) for a "good cause". Proceeds from this year's auction will be going to the Breast Cancer Society of BC.
So your jaw drops to the floor ..and you ask.."What?!?! How can an idea like this fly!?"
Well, believe it and wipe that saliva off your chin. CAC has obviously been able to tap into an emerging market of bachelors and bachelorettes that ranges from the hopeful and inexperienced ingenue to the shrewd and perhaps scandalous "daters" out there. Cr-azy ideas are only cra-zy if noone gives it a shot, but if you have an open mind and want to have some fun, then it becomes unforgettable.

Wow I never realized that CAC was able to host such great events...Unfortunately I'm hosting my own event that night, but I'm definitely looking forward to letting the people at SFU know about the auction itself next year and getting the Asians to spread the word at UBC as well. (I was disapointed that CVC doesn't do something similar.)
