Afro-Asian | Blasian : hapa collaboration

Often referenced by activists and intellectuals including W.E.B DuBois, Malcolm X, Yuri Kochiyama and Vijay Prashad, the 1955 Asian-African Conference in Bandung, Indonesia brought together 29 African and Asian nations.

Bandung still survives in everyday lives...collaborations, political activism, and the hapa generation, specifically the self-proclaimed Afro-Asians or Blasians of mixed Black and Asian ancestry. Some familiar Afro-Asians / Blasians include: Charles Mingus (African American/Chinese/European | jazz legend), Kimora Lee Simmons (Japanese/African American | Baby Phat CEO and model), Amerie (African American/Korean | R&B chanteuse), Chris Won Wong (Chinese/African-Trinidadian | 2 Live Crew member), Foxy Brown (African American/Filipina | music artist), Cassie (Filipina/African American/West Indian/Mexican | R&B singer), Ashanti (Chinese/African American | R&B singer), Tyson Beckford (Jamaican/Chinese | model/actor), Hines Ward (African American/Korean NFL football player), and Tiger Woods (African American/Native American/Thai | golf player).

* Article about BLASIANS: www.asiazine.com: "Blasian relationships have always been the most unique of all interracial blends, but the biggest rarity is Asian men/Black women couples. It is very rare to see an Asian man walking down the street and holding hands with his Black girlfriend or wife. In cities such as Los Angeles and others on the west coast, you are more likely to see these couples. There has been an increase in these relationships. Some people say it may be due to the influence of movies such as 'Romeo Must Die', 'Catfish In Black Bean Sauce' and 'Fakin Da Funk'. Needless to say, these movies did have a considerable effect on both Asian men and Black women. For the first time on screen we saw a Black woman and an Asian man thrown into potentially romantic situations."

Your info about Tyson Beckford is wrong. His parents are Jamaica, and he has a grandmother who is Jamaican-Chinese (chinese from Jamaica)

Thanks for the tip. You're right...it is wrong. Tyson Beckford is from Jamaica. His dad is half Jamaican-half Chinese, and his mom is Jamaican. Tyson was, however, born in New York.

Very interesting!

Don’ t know why this made me laugh... hmm, maybe cuz it’ s such a FOXY BROWN thing to do. Those fracking tats is how I tell them apart actually. LOL, and just remembered that I was at the new MAC store in Rancho Mirage last night and they have a huuuuge photo of her, looks pretty hot I must say.
