In one of the most exciting moments in recent history, Sacha Baron Cohen, the actor/comic behind Borat (and Ali G and the upcoming Bruno) won the Golden Globe for best actor (in the musical or comedy category) last night. In one of the most disappointing moments in recent history, the figure that arrived at the gala to accept the award was actually Cohen and not Borat! I'd been dreaming about a real Borat acceptance speech ever since the nominations came out but i suppose he believes he did his job already and has now apparently retired the Borat character. It was dam fun while it lasted!
This year's Golden Globes reflected a very global exhibition of movies and roles as Babel (which is acted in English, Spanish, Arabic and Japanese and directed by Mexican Alejandro Iñárritu) won best dramatic movie, Forrest Whitaker won for playing infamous Ugandan dictator, Idi Amin (in the Last King of Scotland), Helen Mirren won for playing the Queen E (in....the Queen) though to my disappointment Penelope Cruz nor Volver won in their respective categories. Clint Eastwood's Japanese counterpart to Flags of Our Fathers, in Letters from Iwo Jima also took the best foreign language film (and before you get on your "they are so americanly biased" horse, remember its best foreign LANGUAGE movie and historical epics always win). Kimonos (worn by Japanese women) were also reppin at the Beverly Hilton as Babel's Rinko Kikuchi (who lost to Dreamgirl's Jennifer Hudson for best supporting actress) and what looked like Ken Watanabe's (Letters from Iwo Jima) wife, wear both rockin the traditional garb.
