NLC gig pics

While the flu held back Pluskratch and thus NLC from performing as their full trio and the Stones concert cross the street took up most parking in the vicinity, NLC still brought down their unique beats and cuts to a mixed and packed house in anticipation of their new material, while Mike from Calamalka threw down a laptap set of deep ambient dub tracks (as others in the band could not make it out either) and Mary Ancheta and the Mantra opened the night with her brand of hazily rich, laid back soul. While the former 2 acts' dopeness is well known round town, it was cool to get a first glimpse of Ms. Ancheta who makes a good addition to the city's music scene with the kind of style she's coming from.

Saturday was also the first time I had seen all 3 Chans (Trevor and Matt Chan of the band and their sister Zerlina) in the same place. I'd met Zerlina over 10 years back now (shit) and when I once wore my treasured Shaft shirt, she told me her brother had the same one. Puzzled and curious that another Asian dude could ever be as cool as myself, I later got a glimpse of the record collection room at their place as I heard stories of her bros working on some tracks for this act they were putting together. Some years later, I heard of this local hip hop act that was signed to the Automator's label with a somewhat similar sound. Only later did I put the 2 together and find out the No Luck Club were in fact the same brothers of my friend who told me that her bro rocked the same, dope shirt.

Boon, thanks for sharing your photos. I got busy working, but my head was on the NLC cd-launch. Thanks for not letting the snow slow you down!

DJ Matt looks to be in fine form once again - and sporting a classic "Punisher" skull t-shirt to boot!
