« How to be called a white man pawn, sambo and Uncle Tom by K-os? | Main | New Nor-Wave »
Having been signed to Dan the Automator's then 75 Ark label which eventually folded, Van-City's turntablist and sample crew (which then consisted of bros Trevor and Matt Chan) No Luck Club's first disc, Happiness, was released by west coast hip hop label Illboogie. The boys then made URB magazine's Next 100 soon after, had Saul Williams "guide" a mixtape of theirs, opened for a slew of acts like J5, Krush, Money Mark, M.I.A., Mike Relm, etc. and recently added Vancouver DMC champion Pluskratch to the roster.
The 3 man ensemble (with Trevor maestro'ing the beats and sample sequences and with Matt and Pluskratch scratching, juggling beats and making narratives) are now releasing their second effort, Prosperity on their own and end a string of cross country dates with a homecoming release party this Saturday, Nov. 25 at the Media Club.
Local acts Calamalka (moody dub rock) and Mary Ancheta & the Mantra (Morcheeba like, hazy Brit soul) also join the party.

PROPSPERITY RECORD REVIEW:
Where NLC's first joint, Happiness was more on the Coldcut, Cut Chemist, Kid Koala like steez of fluidly jazzy and quirky breaks of multiple tempos, Properity is definately a growth in terms of overall sound and vision with more abrasive, harder beats in parts and more expansive, trippy or moody tones as well as a bit of that political shiznit too (of the Chinese Canadian history type). If you did like that dusty Coldcut, etc type sound of theirs, although they dont totally abandon it, this may take a bit more to grow on you but like all music that does, the long term results can be more rewarding. Like, my fav track on the disc, Better Times Will Come, resembles the first UNKLE disc territory.
The disc is divided up into 4 parts: I: Cinematic Suite, II: Uptempo Suite, III: Introspective Suite and IV: Nada Suite. The part titles are obviously indicative of the kind of sound they are going for and gives them the opp. to try out quite a few different things. The track probably most resembling the Happiness sound is Turntables on the Bayou (in the Uptempo Suite) while there are a handful of others that follow a similar MO but contain deeper reflective tones than the humourous jazzy vibe in Happiness.
They are still using tons of verbal quotes all over the place, whether cut up or not but its comes to its most political and explicit use in Our Story which is about the head tax on early Chinese immigrants to Canada which range from voices resistant to yellow people coming into the country, political propaganda, the voice of the immigrant, and which ends on a quote from a Bruce Lee interview.
More than anything perhaps, Prosperity reflects the super wide musical influences that Trevor carries with him which will probably make for mastered kraft of all sounds for disc III or IV.
