10th National Metropolis Conference:
Expanding the Debate: Multiple Perspectives
on Immigration to Canada
Halifax, Nova Scotia, April 3-6, 2008

Abstract:

As Canada's demographics have changed significantly due to increased immigration from a wide variety of countries, new generations of Canadians are growing up in an environment where there is much greater diversity. These youth are often less likely to identify themselves as a member of a specific ethno-cultural group. For instance, the number of Canadians identifying themselves as belonging to more than one group was 328,115 in the 2001 census, and is expected to double by 2027. As well, Statistics Canada reports that 452,000 people were in mixed marriages and common-law unions in 2001, up 35 per cent from 1991.

In light of these rapid demographic and societal changes, these young Canadians describe themselves as having fluid identities, perhaps as a result of constant negotiations between multiple ethnicities, nationalities, traditions and communities. In addition to exploring their own identities and sense of belonging, they are challenging our notions of race, ethnicity and national identity.

This has important implications for how people perceive themselves in society and for how public policies in the future should address challenges faced by a growing number of people who do not see themselves fitting into traditional categories. Given the increasing prominence of this issue and the current research gap in this area, this workshop will take a look at the growing number of people with mixed identities, and what it means to Canadian Identity and the Multiculturalism Policy. It will examine the extent to which some Canadians identify themselves with having mixed identities and how this emerging reality affects their attitudes towards Multiculturalism. This workshop will also explore the potential policy implications for Canada's multicultural framework.

Tentative Framing Questions:

What does "mixed identities" mean in the Canadian context? To what extent are people identifying themselves as having mixed identities? How does this challenge our notions of race, ethnicity and national identity?

Does this emerging reality affect these people's sense of belonging? Are new generations of Canadians with mixed identities more likely to embrace Canada's model of multiculturalism?

What are the policy implications for Canada of a growing number of people who identify themselves as having mixed identities?
