Alden E. Habacon Speaking Engagements | View All

I spoke to a bright group of second-year students in the Critical Journalism program at University of Toronto Scarborough. I used my CBA presentation on gender diversity as an opening, and then gave the presentation that I used at UBC with Minelle Mahtani. The students are new to critical theory, so I touched very briefly on the capacity for media to influence attitudes and perspective, and encouraged the students to grow their cultural intelligence. I also addressed the issue of "white guilt" which may be something some of them are struggling with as a result of the critical readings they are engaging. The students had great questions that enabled me to really address some diversity issues honestly and candidly. "Are minorities really undermined in mainstream media?" and "Should we hire more people of colour in the newsroom if it means white men won't get work?" I've included some comments I received by email after the jump.
"I wanted to thank you again because ever since that presentation I've been walking around with my eyes open a little bit more."

"I enjoyed the lecture you gave our class last Thursday Jan31/08, particularly how you encouraged us not to please but to "offend intelligently" in our future work (I really like that turn of phrase "offend intelligently"). As a prospective journalist, your presentation got me thinking about the depth of my own cultural intelligence and networks."
