Travel Section Editor

Position Summary

Reporting to Managing Editor, the Travel Section Editor oversees the content of the International Travel and 48 Hours (in rural Canada) sections of Schema Magazine Features.

About the Sections

Travel - International: This section contains travel writing from the perspectives of cultural navigators. For example, articles may explore questions such as: how does roaming the world as a member of a minority community affect your travel experiences? Do your adventures change how you see your own cultural identity? 800-1000 words.

Travel - 48 Hours (in rural Canada): This section explores travel in remote or rural areas, places off the beaten track that may surprise our readers with their diversity of culture and experiences. Essentially, Travel-48 Hours is the ethnic cool-hunter's guide to life outside the big city. This is a personalized literary journalism--a 48-hour travelogue that explores the cultural diversity of smaller cities and towns in Canada.  800-1000 words.

Roles & Responsibilities

  • Coordinate the solicitation of travel stories, including marketing and outreach to local hostels, online forums, etc
  • Working with the editorial team, brainstorm and determine and select
    stories for each release of Schema In-Depth Release (published 4 times
    a year)
  • Ensure that the two Travel sections have content ready for each production deadline
  • Edit articles for Travel sections and coordinate editing process with Senior Editor
  • Responsible for ensuring that there are complementary images for each
    article, and working with the Creative Director to produce this when
    necessary

Qualifications

  • Strong editing skills
  • Strong writing skills with an interesting and engaging flair
  • Ability to make deadlines
  • Strong interpersonal skills; team-player
  • Interest in travel
  • Interest and/or familiarity with Canada's multicultural issues, the
    Canadian identity, and the concept of cultural navigator
